I was the eldest grandchild, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate. My grandparents showered me with love and affection, providing me with more time, care, and attention than anyone else in our extended family. Some of my fondest childhood memories are deeply intertwined with the moments spent at my grandparents’ house.
My grandmother, a Ukrainian language teacher, played an active role in supporting me in all my endeavors. She stands out as the one who purchased a massive green English-Russian vocabulary book for me when I was just embarking on my journey to learn English. Whenever I visited her, she would affectionately declare, “Alright, Olya, let’s go and have a little gossip.” 😊
My grandfather, a physicist, consistently imparted invaluable wisdom by repeatedly saying, “Olya, if you ever have the chance to acquire new knowledge, seize it, because you never know when or where you might need it in the future.”
Tragically, my grandfather succumbed to cancer just as I welcomed my eldest son into the world. However, my grandmother continued to grace our lives for another 23 years. In her final years, she battled severe arthritis, which deeply concerned me. This was a time when I had just embarked on my journey to study acupuncture. We often discussed the possibility of me visiting her to alleviate her pain using acupuncture needles. Both of us eagerly anticipated that moment. I fervently wished and prayed to acquire the necessary skills to provide her with relief. Regrettably, she passed away a year before I earned my diploma in acupuncture.
To the memory of my deeply loved grandparents, I will continue my research of new ways to support seniors with acupuncture.
Acupuncture can help manage symptoms of degenerative diseases, improve quality of life, and potentially slow down the progression of certain symptoms. Whereas it cannot reverse the damaged tissues or nerves, acupuncture can help to control pain for many seniors without severe side effects.
